Echo Canyon Fire

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - So far, no structures have been lost as several fire agencies battle another large wildland fire several miles west of Molt Road near the Ironwood area.

The Echo Canyon Fire started earlier Wednesday morning and quickly swept into the timber. It is unknown how many structures are threatened at this time. Yellowstone County DES Coordinator Jim Craft and County Commissioner John Ostlund were both on scene earlier Wednesday in case more county resources were needed.

Ostlund says because of the area the fire is in, having air support is really helping with the battle. "You can see this is awful rough county it's hard to get a fire truck around, there's some spots where you can't get one so I think its an enormous help and we're here today to see how it works," said Ostlund.

This is the first year county officials have contracted two companies to bring in air support. Officials say it's to early to know how many acres have burned.

For those of us who live out in the Echo Canyon area a little more video and coverage would be great. Our houses and property are just as important as those in Rehberg Ranch. It's nice to know our County Commissioner is out "checking on how things work", but I would prefer some additional fire fighters and a little more news coverage!
