Jalapeno FDA Warning

By Naomi Pescovitz

BILLINGS- First it was a health warning for fresh tomatoes. Now, jalapenos are being recalled because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration is saying the cause of the recent nationwide Salmonella outbreak could have started with Mexican grown jalapeno peppers and some local restaurants are feeling the heat.

"I worry because if anything happened here in my restaurant, or somewhere else, it's really concerning because, it's for the good of our people, our customers, our community," Juan Nuno, owner of Guadalajara Restaurant, said.

After receiving a recall letter from their pepper distributor, Guadalajara took the fresh peppers out of all menu items and replaced them with alternatives. But there are other ways to get fresh jalapenos in your diet. You can still find the peppers on the shelves of many Montana grocery stores. But if you want to guarantee that your vegetables are Salmonella free, you could grow them yourself.

"You just want to make sure that you're using clean water. You want to make sure your hands are clean. After you go to the bathroom, wash your hands. If you're washing dishes in the kitchen, I would still wash them before you handle your food," Teri Smith, A-1 Landscaping and Nursery Production Assistant, said.

Experts say the prime growing season for peppers and tomatoes is almost over.

Officials say no one has contracted Salmonella in Montana but symptoms include cramping, fever, nausea, and diarrhea.
