Protect Public Lands

BILLINGS - As energy prices soar, so does the push for responsible oil and gas development on public lands.

Millions of acres in the Rocky Mountain West are available for such development, and hunters and anglers want to make sure such activity does not hurt the health of the area.

The group Sportsmen for Responsible Energy Development, along with scientists and policy experts have developed a series of reccomendations to ensure the conservation of fish, wildlife and water resources on public lands while developing energy resources for our country.

"Sportsmen support the wise use of energy resources from our public land," said Chris Wood, COO of Trout Unlimited. "What we are unwilling to do is sit idly by while short-term energy development decisions compromise the long-term health of the lands and water that we and the communities we hail from depend on."

The recommendations are being presented on Capitol Hill Monday, and both the McCain and Obama Camps are being briefed on them as well. Congress is expected to take up the issue in full next year.
