BILLINGS - The Gold Wings have officially arrived in Billings, and they spent the day making plenty of noise downtown at the Depot.
"Have you ever ridden down the highway in a rocking chair? That's what its like on a Gold Wing," Gold Wing Touring Association State Director, Sharon Hilgemeier said. These folks are passionate about their motorcycles, which is why so many of them show for events like the one this week, hosted by the Gold Wing Touring Association.
"This gives us the opportunity to see these people once a year and we just renew our friendships and that's what is so wonderful about it," Gold Wing driver, Mary Flora said. The Taste of Billings Street Fair showcased food and a silent auction. But the real stars are the Gold Wing drill teams who spend hours preparing for the main event.
"Gold Wings are the absolute best bikes in the world, the people that ride them are the best, and I have been on this team for 9 years and I would not give up the team for the world," Northwest Wings Drill Team member, Candy Craig said.
Gold Wings can cost up to $30,000 dollars, and riders say the hefty price is what keeps them from risking crazy tricks like some sports bikers. But just because you wont catch a Gold Winger popping a wheelie or riding backwards, does not mean they aren't in for a good time.
"What I really get a charge out of is, before the performance starts, all of the team goes out and they start making individual circles, and up and down the road, and getting used to the road, and the bumps and everything. To me that looks like Saturday night on the freeway and I absolutely love to watch the team do that," Craig said.
The week is not over for our Gold Wing visitors. There is a day-long vendor show Wednesday where motorcycle fans check out merchandise and chat with the drivers. Bring your Montana ID for half price on admission.
