Wolf Kill Legislation

BILLINGS - The Bush Administration is taking issue with a bipartisan bill that would compensate ranchers for livestock killed by wolves.

During a Senate hearing Wednesday, officials for the administration argued it should not be the U.S. Government's responsibility to pay ranchers full market value for animals killed by wolves. Senator Jon Tester argues it is a federal responsibility because a federal agency led the way in delisting the wolf.

The Senator says, "It's common sense legislation. It's fair to Montana ranchers. Montana has a great wolf management plan. It's time the federal government steps up and compensates ranchers in times of loss."

Tester and Senator Max Baucus support the bill as does Wyoming Republican Senator John Barrasso. Barrasso says the legislation is the only fair way to compensate ranchers who bear the brunt of federal policy reintroducing wolves to the region.
