FORSYTH - Cleanup is underway four miles west of Forsyth after several cars of a freight train carrying coal derailed early Monday morning.

Gus Melonas with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway said a portion of track washed out causing 10 of the 123 cars to derail. One of the 10 cars was a locomotive. Melonas said the locomotive fell into the Yellowstone river. He said they are working with the Department of Environmental Quality to make sure the fuel in that locomotive does not cause problems for the river.

He said they put containment pads around the locomotive to soak the fuel up. Melonas said an unknown amount of coal also spilled into the river. Officials with Montana's Fish Wildlife and Parks said the coal will not pose a problem to wildlife in the area.

Melonas said about 75 people are working to put in a temporary track that he hopes will be done Tuesday. He said they hope to have the permanent tracks rebuilt by later in the week. The train that derailed was on its way from Decker to Superior, Wisconsin. Melonas said tracks have washed out before, but he wouldn't call it common.
