BILLINGS - Fire fighters are still fighting the Rehberg Ranch Fire that forced at least 40 homes to be evacuated Friday night. Officials were able to get a hand on the fire and allowed residents to move back into their homes around 1:00 am Saturday morning. But they say they still have at least twenty five firefighters currently on scene. As of Saturday afternoon, the fire has burned about 1.200 acres just north of Billings. Officials say they were able to get the fire partially contained overnight but say because of the dry and windy weather, it is crucial they remain on scene. Two helicopters from the DNRC were brought in to help put out the blaze, as well other crews including Shepard, Red Lodge, Lockwood, and the BLM. Fire Chief Paul Dextras says because of the holiday, the fire department was spread thin, they needed all the help they could get. "We did a page for all members of the department and we played catch up for most of the day, but if it hadn't been for the efforts of everyone all night we wouldn't have been able to get parameters around this fire or at least get it from spreading," says Dextras. All roads that were closed off friday night were opened Saturday morning. Officials say that when fires happen in open spaces like this one, they can be unpredictable, and warns people to stay out of the area.
