Teen Driving Danger

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - Memorial Day is right around the corner which means millions are planning to drive to their holiday destinations and some new numbers have officials zeroing on teens driving at night.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says more than two-thirds of young drivers and passengers killed in nighttime crashes were not wearing seat belts. Officials say they're now investing $7.5 million dollars in a new advertising campaign to get teens to buckle up. Local teens claim they always buckle up but they say they're several distractions they encounter when they drive at night.

"The brights are on and sometimes that can get you in your mirror and get you distracted and catch you off guard," said teen driver Landry Brockel. "The lights and the people with their brights on, and different house lights and colors, the under gold of certain cars and stuff usually distracts me," said teen driver Jessica Nobil.

The students say having friends in the car and either calling or texting on their cell phones also are huge distractions when they sit behind the wheel.
