Postage Rate To Increases By One Cent

By Alden Downing

HELENA - The cost of postage is about to go up again. This time by one penny to 42 cents a stamp.

Due to a new law, the United States Postal Service will re-evaluate the price of postage every year, creating the possibility of small, annual increases. But you could save yourself some money with "the forever stamp."

"These stamps that are purchased this week at 41 cents can be used for the increase that's coming next week and if there's on in the future you can still use the 41 cents forever stamp that you purchased at 41 cents," explained USPS spokesperson Patty Donahoe. "Their rate will change with the rate increase but you will never have to add postage to them."

The rate increase to 42 cents a stamp takes effect Monday, May 12th. But don't throw out your 41 cent stamps. Post offices have ample supply of one-cent stamps to make them useable.
