Commodity Exports

By Catherine Ross

BILLINGS - According to the Montana Department of Commerce, commodity exports are on the rise. They increased by almost 35% last year to reach a record high of about $1.75 billion dollars. Among manufactured products, many commodity groups set new records.

Bulk shipments of wheat led all commodity exports with more than $600 million dollars in sales. Vehicles, parts and accessory items topped $100 million dollars for the first time. Meanwhile, shipments of inorganic chemicals are up 37% since last year. Pharmaceutical product shipments grew 65% in the same period, and aircraft exports rose by 92%.

Governor Brian Schweitzer says over the past five years, Montana has had the second highest annual growth rate in export value in the nation. Montana is also one of the only 22 states to see growth in both exports and manufacturing employment.
