Democratic Contenders Electrify Butte

BUTTE - It turned out to be what many witnesses called an electrifying night for Montana democrats in Butte for the annual Mansfield-Metcalf Dinner.

Senator Barack Obama offered some Montana tailored messages including a $150-billion dollar green energy plan with job opportunities for Montanans in creating renewable energy industries. He also offered a high-level position in some capacity to a Native American if he's elected.

Hillary Clinton also vowed to fully fund the Indian Health Bill and create a more positive "government to government" relationship with Native American tribes. She also discussed reaching out to rural farmers in support of a permanent farm disaster bill.

Senator Jon Tester said, "It was a great night with incredible energy." He offered his respect for both candidates, his colleagues in the Senate. He said "They both have a vision to take this country in a different direction both from a foreign policy and domestic policy. So we'll be paying attention closely now, through the primary and beyond and I anticipate sometime shortly after the primary being able to endorse one or the other."

Overall, most of the Democratic party leaders in attendance agreed the timing of Montana's primary is a positive step in bringing Western State issues and rural issues to the forefront.

Senator Tester, "I think it's great for Montana. One of my frustrations, heck since I've been alive, is that presidential candidates and presidents very seldom come here. Earlier we had former President Bill Clinton here. Sunday night we have two presidential candidates here, that's making history and I think it's a whole lot of fun. It's great for me and for all Montanans who are concerned about the direction this country is heading."
