Bison Numbers

BILLINGS - It appears that more than 1,500 Yellowstone bison have died off since last summer. Yellowstone National Park estimates there are 3,000 bison now compared to 4,700 estimated in late summer of 2007.

The numbers have decreased due to brucellosis risk management, hunting and slaughter. In the past, population reduction such as this hasn't impacted the herd's ability to reproduce.

Historically, the herd increases from 8% to 12% in the summer. The park works under the Interagency Bison Management Plan with other agencies to conserve wild bison, while keeping Montana's brucellosis-free status.
