Red Lodge Double Homicide

By Nick Lough

RED LODGE - A 17-month-old child is now in police custody, but investigators are still on the scene of a double homicide in Carbon County.

Police say they took 21-year-old Charles White into custody early Friday morning in Cody, Wyoming, but in Red Lodge, police tape still remains at the scene as investigators piece together the clues of this double homicide.

On Thursday evening Red Lodge Police responded to a 911 call at a residence on Hauser Avenue. When police arrived they found the bodies of 43-year-old Elizabeth Shirley and 21-year-old Madeleine White. The two are mother and daughter. "I just got sick. I got sick just wondering what, why, who and how it could happen in a town like Red Lodge," said Red Lodge resident Samantha Thomas.

Autumn Metzsch lives across the street from the scene. She says she moved to Red Lodge to get away from the violence of the big city and that this neighborhood is a great place to raise a family. "To have it right across the street from you is pretty scary. People are friendly they like to ride their bikes. There's not a lot of violence here at all," said Metzsch.

Red Lodge schools were closed for the day. Around town residents say this time of year they're usually talking about a possible spring snow storm, the ski resort, or March Madness, but that's now been overshadowed by the loss of two of their own.

"Intense, it's just intense; I've been on the phone all morning talking to different people," said Thomas. Residents say they'll try to get on with their lives as best they can, but they say it’s hard to forget a scene quite like this.

I was shocked when my mom called me up and told me. Tirzah was one of my close friends, and i dated Chuck earlier this summer. I never thought this would happen to someone in Red lodge, especially someone so close to me. Liz and Tirzah will be dearly missed by their friends and family.

I am just heartbroken about this story. I was a close friend of Tirzah White. I also was friends with Liz Shirley they were both wonderful people. I will pray for their family members. God Bless my little godson. (Tirzah's son)
