RED LODGE - A double murder shakes the town of Red Lodge, Montana, and now police have a possible suspect in custody.
Red Lodge Police Chief Richard Pringle says the victims were two women. Officials say the murders happened around 6:30 Thursday evening. Early Friday morning they announced that a year and a half old child was missing.
Police Chief Richard Pringle says 21-year-old Charles S. White was arrested early Friday morning at a hospital in Cody, Wyoming. He had a small child with him, who was not identified. A police report does not say why they were at the hospital.
Police say White is a suspect in the shooting deaths of 21-year-old Madeleine White and 44-year-old Elizabeth Shirley. Madeleine White's 17-month-old son was missing after the shooting, but has been found safe.
Meantime, all public schools in Red Lodge will be closed today in the wake of last night's shooting. Superintendent Mark Brajcich says the incident happened only 100 yards from the Red Lodge Middle School. He says while the situation is still uncertain, he doesn't want to subject students and parents to any anxiety until everything is resolved.
At first officials couldn't give much information about the murders; they could just say that the two female victims appear to be mother and daughter, and they appear to have died from gun shot wounds. Red Lodge Police and Carbon County Sheriff's deputies arrived on scene shortly after the murders. Friday morning the block of Hauser Avenue South from 17th to 18th Streets were completely blocked off by law enforcement vehicles and crime tape. Red Lodge Police Chief Richard Pringle says it was a long night and morning. "It's been hectic. This doesn't happen very often, thank goodness."
As of yet, police are still looking for witnesses. Officials don't know who made the 911 call. They speculate that it may have been one of the victims.
"We're still investigating to see who that was because no one gave a name," says Chief Pringle.
We spoke to several Red Lodge residents. They said the whole town heard the ambulances, and that every police and sheriff car in town was at the scene. One woman at a local hotel, locked the front doors, and kept them locked through the night, just to feel safe.

Terrible things happen and the tragedy isn't that it happened in our "perfect little mountain hideaway town." The tragedy is that two good people lost their lives in a very sad way. Remember them for what they were in life, not how they died. They should be afforded that respect. The respect for human life.
