Hardin Jail

By Joel Lundstad & The Associated Press

BILLINGS - Gov. Brian Schweitzer is suggesting the $27 million jail sitting empty in Hardin could be eligible to house low-risk sex offenders or prisoners from the Crow reservation.

Schweitzer made the suggestions in a letter this week to Hardin residents and city officials who had sought the state's help in filling the jail. He also suggested city leaders could negotiate with other jails in the state to house some of their prisoners.

Hardin leaders had promoted the privately built, 464-bed jail as the city's biggest economic development project in decades. But contracts for inmates were never lined up and it has sat empty since its completion last year.
