Bison Slaughter

By Kathy Weber & The Associated Press

BILLINGS - The number of Yellowstone National Park bison killed through disease management and hunting is projected to hit an all-time high this winter.

Fifty-nine more bison were shipped to slaughter Tuesday from the Stephens Creek holding pens near Gardiner. More than 200 animals are still in the corrals and are scheduled to be killed before spring, bringing the total to nearly 1,100 this winter.

That's nearly 15 more than the record set in 1997. Heavy snowfall this winter forced more bison to lower elevations, which led to the capture of more animals.
