BILLINGS - A Department of Emergency Service official says he's surprised a Molt company, Mattingly Testing, is being investigated for mishandling radioactive material.

DES official Jim Kraft says whenever workers handle hazardous material; safety always needs to be the number one concern. Kraft says Yellowstone County has more radioactive material than the community might be aware of especially in hospitals and survey firms.

Kraft says people also need to be aware of what this type of material can do. "When you look at radioactive material you want to stay away from the source of that material because it's either giving off a gamma ray or a beta ray and that gamma ray or beta ray can do damage to cells and tissue," said Kraft.

Kraft says county officials are prepared to respond to any emergency involving radioactive material.
