Moving the State Primary

HELENA - The Secretary of State's Office says that Tuesday night's Montana Republican Caucus only proves the relevance of moving Montana's primary up to Super Tuesday.

Secretary of State Brad Johnson supported a measure during the 2007 Legislative session to move the state primary to February 5th, but the bill died in the Senate.

Deputy Secretary of State Ralph Peck says the success of the GOP caucus both renews their efforts to revise the date of Montana's primary but also creates some questions.

"Tuesday night does illustrate the fact that the caucus process does work," Peck said. "But it also created a lot of questions as people saw a change from the standard process that we go through for primary election where each individual's vote can be recorded and seen."

Peck adds that there are more intricacies involved in a Super Tuesday state primary. The election would be a much larger scale, open, election that Tuesday night's caucus.
