Schweitzer Specifies 2010 Plan

By Alden Downing

HELENA - Governor Brian Schweitzer is reiterating his 2010 reduced greenhouse gas emissions plan. And he's counting on state agency directors to enforce part the measure.

The governor has directed that the state's motorpool fleet move to an average efficiency of 30 miles per gallon by the year 2010. Each agency is responsible for tracking fuel efficiency of each vehicle purchased or leased for the agency as well as tracking the use of pickups.

"We've told all of the directors in all of the agencies of the state government, they're responsibility is to achieve 30 miles per gallon by 2010," Schweitzer said. "Some agencies will have a tougher time, some less. But the bottom line is that the entire portfolio will make it to 30 miles per gallon by 2010."

The miles-per-gallon cap does not apply to certain vehicles including trucks or construction vehicles. Agencies must have written justification from the agency director to increase the number of pickups used in their fleet.
