Sylvan Pass Discussions

By Kyle Midura

BILLINGS - Discussions on winter access of Sylvan Pass in Yellowstone National Park continued Tuesday. The Sylvan Pass Study Group and other interested parties discussed avalanche safety on the pass.
The group discussed the current system involving artillery shells, and the merits of alternative systems such as "full forecasting." That method involves sensors that can detect early signs of upcoming avalanches. Groups were split between the various methods and a combination approach.
However, participants were confident that a solution can be found. "We can come up with something that everybody's comfortable with, the park service is comfortable, that their employees are safe, we from government, local government in Wyoming, are confident that our visitors are safe crossing there," said Park County Commissioner Tim French, "and I think we can come up with some good things."
The two day event wrapped up Tuesday. No word yet on when decisions will be finalized.
