BILLINGS - The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is set to hold their 20th annual banquet in Billings. One topic of conversation sure to come up: the proposed removal of the wolf from the Endangered Species list.

With the recent federal wolf plan, Beartooth Chapter Chairman Mike Baugh said he's been taking a lot of questions. The foundation does not take a stance on the federal Wolf Recovery Program, but does favor existing plans to remove the wolf from the Endangered Species list.

Baugh also says that despite all the recent publicity, the wolf legislation is not the Elk Foundation's biggest focus. "The Elk Foundation tries to stay out of the political arenas even though the membership and member base is concerned about wolves, and they're here and here to stay. Our position is they need to be managed through sound biological means, but the number one issue facing elk country is habitat loss," said Baugh.

The event is scheduled for February 9th, at the Holiday Inn Trade Center and includes auctions and dinner. Officials say they need to raise more than $115,000 dollars over the course of this year.
