Schweitzer Urges State Agencies 'Reduce Energy Use'

HELENA - Last month Governor Brian Schweitzer released his plan to reduce the state's energy consumption by 20% by the year 2010. This week he issued a memo to state agencies outlining ways they can set the standard for such reductions.

Schweitzer says the goal is not only to reduce the state's carbon footprint, but to also save taxpayers up to $3 million a year in energy-related costs.

"Well you can start by looking around your own office. You can use fewer lights, you can convert your light bulbs to those curly-q, corkscrew fluorescent light bulbs," Schweitzer said. "You can change the way you heat your office. Maybe you decrease the temperature when you leave or you allow it to increase when you're gone."

Schweitzer is also urging state agencies and Montanans to "buy green" through the state government Central Stores. The store showcases over 3,000 "green" or "earth friendly" office supplies.
