Yellowstone National Park

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS - More than 100 scientists and educators are currently gathering in Mammoth Hot Springs at Yellowstone National Park. They're discussing issues including thermal biology, geology of the area, and alternative energy.

Montana State University's Thermal Biology Institute organized this year's conference. This is the third time since 2003 they've been the hosts. One scientist says some of the greatest experts that study Yellowstone will give presentations.

Organizer Zach Jay says gathering this amazing group of people is great news. "To have people of this caliber all together in one place, I guess you could call it a summit, it has a great impact on science, the public and education."

Another main topic of discussion at the conference was wildlife. When driving through Yellowstone National Park it's nearly impossible to miss wildlife, but with the click of a button one group is trying to make it easy to track Yellowstone wildlife from your home computer.

Yellowstone National Park boasts some picturesque scenes and amazing animals, but visitors have never been able to go in depth, with all the research on the area. "People have been doing science and research in Yellowstone for 100 years and in that time an incredible amount of info has been collected and yet we haven't done a good job of organizing it," said Yellowstone Center for Resources Ann Rodman.

But officials at the Yellowstone Center for Resources are solving that problem by creating a website anyone can log on to. "You can download info from the website you can read it off the website, you can have a one page summary, some pages have essays and if you read the six pages you will be as up to speed on wolves in Yellowstone as people working on the project," said Rodman.

"We're committed to keeping this updated so you can check and see how the wolves are doing, how the moose are doing, how the cut throat trout are doing, and get it directly from the science from that year," said Rodman.

The website is http://www.greateryellowstonescience.org. Officials say this is a major step for both scientists and enthusiasts because the information is available for major research or for the casual web surfer interested in the basics.
