BILLINGS - It's estimated that 1 in 3 children born today will develop diabetes some time in their life. That's why Senator Max Baucus came to Billings Clinic Thursday morning.
He told the crowd of diabetes patients and doctors that he is working to get more federal dollars for diabetes research. Representatives from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation also presented the senator with an award for his efforts. Senator Baucus says, "My heart goes out to anyone who has diabetes. The pain and suffering they go though is unbelievable, and I'm going to do all I can to find a cure."
Pam Hoffman, whose daughter has Type 1 Diabetes, says, "It's really frustrating. You spend all day everyday trying to balance blood sugars basically. You have to count carbohydrates. Everything that goes into Bailey's mouth we have to count."
Senator Baucus included extra money for diabetes research in a Medicare bill that will go back to the senate floor this year.
