The Hellraising Generation

By Greg LaMotte

BILLINGS - He described it as the greatest generation. And those who battled in World War Two and raised most of us are called the Baby Boomers.
Recently former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw spoke with KULR about the largest generation known as baby boomers. When asked how he would describe the baby boomers, Brokaw said, "The hellraising generation. I honestly think they're not as bad as a lot of people have characterized them. They're not nearly as homogenous as the greatest generation was. That generation went through the great depression and a war and they came back with a common set of values. The boomers had more liberty to choose the kind of life that they wanted and they went in a log of different directions. The assassination of John Kennedy was effectively the beginning of the 60's and the baby boomers were seven and eight years old when he was assassinated a little older in some cases. They became teenagers in 1968 and the world seemed to be coming apart for them. There was a deeply unpopular war in Vietnam. They were pushing back against parental authority. They were creating new forms of music. They were challenging authority of institutions in their lives including universities and law enforcement. But I believe a lot of that was triggered by the assassination of President Kennedy."
Brokaw was asked what caused him to move to Montana almost 20 years ago?
"We've been there a for a long time now. I started coming in the 1970's backpacking in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, started fishing, and tried to find 100 acres and a cabin that was the hardest thing to find. So, in the Absaroka range I found this wonderful ranch as you know between Big Timber and Livingston and it's been a huge part of our lives for the past 20 years, now and it will be for as long as we are around." Brokaw says some of the best music ever written came from the year 1968.
