BILLINGS - It's a challenging game that requires you make a word out of a pile of letters, quickly. Groups across the country gather weekly to challenge each other at the scrabble board.
The scrabble group at MSU-Billings is in its grassroots stage of recruiting members. Its leader, David Weiss, is the top ranked scrabble player in Montana. I found out just how good he is.
How do you kick this off? Poker has shuffle up and deal, is it like let's get ready to scrabble? We shake the bag, we each draw a letter, and whoever gets the letter closest to a goes first. I might play words you've never seen before. I won't play words that are bad. Let's just play David.
4-5-6-11-22. 22 that was your first play! Fine f-i-n-e 4-5-6-7. 2-3-4-5-6-7-8-12-13-39. 39? I'm working here trying to take on the champion and you're in the background laughing. That's not going to fly lady that's not going to fly. Oh shoot that won't work. Jab j-a-b. 24 ikat...ikat that's a word? You are welcome to challenge me. Out. Bad idea. Bop -- b-o-p. I like my odds, oh know. Defined, 2-3-7-8-9-10-11-12-24. Look at all the different things I can make. This is good. This is good. What's your top score? Have you beat 208? I challenge you. It's a challenge. 15-16-17-18-double this 36-37-47-48-49...49 what? I'm out. Scrabble! Scrabble! Final score: 508 to 230. Next week it's on. Next week you and me showdown! Showdown! You better read up on your dictionary skills.
Ikat is a word; it's a method of printing woven fabric by tie-dyeing the yarn. If you want to join the scrabble club just show up, anyone, any skill level can come. Their next meeting is Wednesday December 5th, at 6 pm at MSU-Billings.
