BILLINGS - The Special Olympic torch for the 2007 Montana Special Olympic games left Billings Monday morning and ended the day 83 miles down the road in Big Timber.
The run helps raise awareness for Special Olympics and funds to send athletes to the state games. Organizers of the run say it's a good way for law enforcement and the athletes interact. Billings' police officer Matthew Brewer has participated for the past four or five years. He says, "I enjoy the athletes and I know this is a big deal for them and they look up to law enforcement and it's just something you can give back to the community."
Sheryl Shockley the Special Olympic Montana Yellowstone Valley Area Law Enforcement Torch Run Liaison says, "Our athletes get to see law enforcement as the good guys they're here helping us they're their friends some of them have such close bonds with these officers."
The law enforcement torch run is in its 21st year here in Montana. Runners will carry the torch through Montana to Great Falls for the start of the games May 16th.
