What's Up With Yellowstone Kelly

By Keagan Harsha

BILLINGS - High atop the Billings rims, amidst hiking trails and bike paths, lies a grave. Who does it belong to and why is it there? The grave belongs to one of the greatest Indian scouts to ever roam the western United States.
Luther S. Kelly was born in upstate New York in 1849. He served in Minnesota and the Dakotas during the Civil War, and it's there that he first began exploring the wild frontier. Kelly then became a government scout, and spent a lot of time exploring the Yellowstone Valley with General Miles and General Forsyth.
Kelly retired with his wife in California, but because of his love for Montana and the Yellowstone Valley, he was buried atop the rims on what is now known as Kelly Mountain. Kelly died in 1928 and his body was moved to Billings shortly thereafter.
His funeral garnered national attention, as hundreds joined in a parade celebrating his life. If you have a random question about something you've seen, email it to us at news@kulr.com and we'll let you know what's up with that.
