USPS District Office to Close

BILLINGS - Several dozen jobs in Billings have been eliminated.

Thursday, the United States Postal Service announced that it was closing the Big Sky USPS District Office in Billings on South 26th Street. It is the management and administrative support office for Montana postal operations. That aspect of business is being consolidated and will now be handled from operations in South Dakota.

Forty jobs will be eliminated at the Billings office, but employees will have the option of taking other postal positions, or opting for early retirement, if they qualify. The main post office and sorting center is also housed at the South 26th Street facility, but neither will be affected by Thursday's announcement.

Six other district offices nationwide are closing as well. A USPS spokesperson said it is a way for them to cut costs. The closure of the Billings office will happen over a five-month period of time.

I'm guessing most of the comments are from actual USPS workers. Management was always a brown nose joke. I agree with too many chiefs and not enough Indians. The workers in the back working nights and weekends never got credit. That place can be more efficient and do the same work they have always done. Management people would probably NOT except a position in the back WORKING. Management couldn't hack it:-( Let Sioux Falls manage it. But I disagree about not having home delivery. Not a problem for younger folks that can drive to the PO. Honestly it's our older generation that solely depends on on the PO delivery. The younger generation will just continue to do more & more online. The employees doing the actual work nights, weekends & Holidays earn their pay. Just working for USPS was an aggravation!!!

I can't believe the some of the comment. One needs to think before they speak. The Postal Service is the only delivery unit that will go to ANY address in the entire country. Of course, you can go to another mailer and pay two to three times more. And to those that think that UPS is doing so much more. Why are UPS truck dropping shipments on our back docks? As for mail carriers making of 100K get real. Management needs to be cut more and more. If we don't have mail why do we need so much management? Cut from the TOP!

If I tried to operate a business the way the USPS operates, my customers would go elsewhere for service. Oh wait a minute, that's what is happening at the Postal Service. Far too many overpaid managers and executives and the front-line mail carriers are not held accountable when packages "vanish" during transit. The package tracking at USPS is a friggen joke as well. After the innitial scan, no more tracking occurs, sometimes even after delivery. You need to consult your "magic 8 ball" to see if your package will ever make it to the destination.

Kind of funny how many people write a comment about the Postal Service but know nothing about it only what they read in the paper or watch on tv! What you are reading and watching is all from higher managements comments. This place is WAY TO TOP HEAVY. Eliminate mgmt postions

Its ashame that one has to sit here and read these comments when so many are not familiar with the operations. It's the union that has bankrupted the Postal Service.

USPS is still a bargain for what they do. Yes cut out the tiers of management and get the job done. You know the U word (union) may have a lot to do with these problems at the USPS.

The usps is outdated, and it needs to go! mail carriers making over 100k? maybe just maybe that is why ups and fedex are killing them!

Why would I send anything via USPS when a letter or package can get there days earlier with an alternative!!! Poor service = poor revenue...

I am a small corporation with lots of priority mailing, recently switched from USPS to UPS - it costs a few dollars more but so worth it - for months filed complaints about mail not being delivered with no results - finally unable to put up with it any longer - it is like the staff was purposely holding up the mail in certain parts of the country, especially the New Jersey area - ironic they advertise priority mailing and then cannot deliver - I would close the doors on our business before I ever went back to using the USPS again, sad state of affairs - they need a complete enema from the top down - have excellent workers and people in our local area but it seems to stop there

They cannot cut the carriers salary UNION..Yhey need to get rid of the Stupidvisiors,to many chiefs not enough Indians.Managers, urpervisors are nothing more than a dead weight.Carriers are the MULES.

the best thing to do eliminate the carriers we need to act like the UPS and FEDX we only need a driver to deliver the parcels and Expressmail if they want their mail to be delivered they need to buy a PO BOX ! more revenues folks! no more free services ! so crazy to deliver one piece of mail to a single house everyday they adding delivery point that's insane and think about the maintenance and gas prices ! I know we have senior citizen out there this business model is obsolete !

The entire US Postal Service should be eliminated. The serice loses Billions a year. There are many other ways and means to transport information and make money. Look at UPS and FEDEX.

south dakota????? TEster and Baucus need to find out WHY ?

Kim said on Thursday, Mar 24 at 8:21 PM

With the U.S. POSTAL SERVICE becoming fully automated, the Manager and Supervisor positions should now be obsolete. Letter Carriers know what to do.

Alex said on Thursday, Mar 24 at 7:30 PM

More needs to be cut from the top. Everyone knows that the USPS is top heavy..Unfortunatly management never looks in the mirror when it cuts. Put a sacthel on them and make them work under what they created.

TJ said on Thursday, Mar 24 at 6:44 PM

Has anyone even considered paycuts for EVERYONE or do they just not want to even think about that????

frank said on Thursday, Mar 24 at 4:55 PM

now if we can get them to close the administrative office and eliminate some of them 350k 39 vice presidents we'll have something going. dump the watchers and add the workers.
