Police Chief Let Go

HARDIN - Hardin's new police chief is released from the job less than six months after he started.

The City of Hardin began re-establishing its own police force October of 2009. In late August of 2010, administrators said they had to take a big step back as two of the department’s three employees have been let go. Former Police Chief Jeff Arntz held the position for less than six months.

Mayor Kim Hammond said the city council decided to terminate Arntz before his probationary period ended. She defends the decision, but would not give any specifics on why Arntz and Officer Francesca Brashear were released. Other city administrators also refused to comment.

Despite the setback, the mayor said their goal hasn't changed. "We still have six months. We're just going to move forward, hire a new chief," she said, "and we'll just move on, the city is used to moving on."

The only remaining member of the Hardin Police Department is Brandon Brashear, Francesca's husband.

KULR-8 spoke with Arntz Thursday by phone; he had undergone a medical procedure, but said he was shocked and disheartened by the decision.
