BILLINGS - Nestled in the concrete jungle that is the fair grounds grows a Gr-8 Landscape. It is a demonstration garden grown by people enrolled in the entry-level Master Gardner class offered through the Yellowstone County Extension. "Anybody can have a green thumb if you put your mind to it," said Rob Wahl, master gardener.

Square-foot gardens are on display at the site at MontanaFair. "They're showing a way to garden in an urban setting and keeping it small and targeted to make it a lot less daunting," said Wahl.

You can pack a lot of plants into a 4x4 bed. "In this raised bed we've got a mixture of flowers, some flowers help keep insects away, we've got basil, cabbage, geraniums," pointed out Wahl. "I encourage anybody who wants to learn to grow to spend the few weeks that it takes for the entry-level Master Gardener class in the springtime. It works so well to teach about soil preparation, and how to plant and take care of the plants."

The demonstration garden has been located at the fairgrounds for about a decade.
