Gr-8 Landscapes - Belinak

BILLINGS - Hidden behind the Belinak home in Laurel is a great landscape. "We don't even think we have to go on a vacation in the summer because this is our retreat," said Barbara Belinak. She has managed to make a big statement within a small space. “You always have something going on," she said.

The backyard is this teacher's creative outlet. "I do almost all perennials in the big beds and then in the pots I was into red, white, and blue for a while, and now I'm into intense colors. So, it can change," she said talking about her tastes.

Small spaces have their challenges, though. "What has happened to me is that the trees on that end of the house started providing a lot of shade," she said. "We used to have roses and different flowers there, now, we're having to find things like hostas and ferns and finding plants that work well in the shade."

Barbara has found an interesting use for pop cans in her flowerpots, "You can crunch up the cans, but I just put them in the bottom of the pot and then you don't use so much soil, good drainage, and the pot isn't so hot."

On a hot summer day, her backyard makes for a great getaway. "It really is peaceful," she said. "I said to Mike, we were out on the deck for coffee in the morning, that I wish we would do that everyday. So, we need to do that more," said Barbara.
