BILLINGS - Governor Brian Schweitzer has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of a Montana soldier finally returning home from the Vietnam War.

First Lieutenant Paul G. Magers, of Billings, was killed in action in 1971. His remains were finally located and identified and are on their way home to his family. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetary in Laurel Friday following a 10:30 a.m. funeral service at Holy Rosary Church in Billings.

I wouldn't expect Half-Mast for my son either, if he was retired or Honorably Discharged. But, when a Soldier loses his/her life in the line of duty, you bet, put that flag at Half-Mast!!

Have Gun Will Travel is wrong. The flag code that governs when flags can be flown at half-staff states that in the case of "the death of a member of the Armed Forces from any State, territory, or possession who dies while serving on active duty, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff”. There are many folks who disagree with Gov. Schweitzer on many issues, but I doubt this is one of them. I guess you can’t please all of the people some of the time, even with a practice that pays due respect and hurts no one. One last note. Like me, you survived your military service. Since the rule applies only to deaths during active service, you need not fear that the flag will be lowered on your behalf.

I'm sorry to the family but half-masting the flag is not for every military person that dies, our governor is out of control on this part of his authority. Halfing is for heads of state and such. And yes I'm ex-military and don't expect a half mast when my day comes.
