BILLINGS - In light of Wednesday's bear attacks, officials are warning anyone planning on spending time in Montana's 'Bear Country' to be prepared.

Experts with The Base Camp here in Billings recommend anyone going outdoors learn about the area they plan to visit. They suggest calling game wardens and getting up to-date information about recent bear activity. They say it is also important for campers to maintain a clean campsite. They recommend people use an approved container to prevent wildlife from accessing food. Officials also recommend people carry bear spray with them at all times.

Don Palm, Education Coordinator for The Base Camp, said bear spray is the most effective tool. "It's more effective than firearms and more effective than other defensives. And it's one of those things that anyone can operate."

Palm said people shouldn't let bear attacks deter them from visiting 'Bear Country'. He said the right equipment and education almost always ensures everyone a positive and safe outdoor experience.
