Joey’s Road - Snacking

BILLINGS - Out-of-sight, out-of-mind, that’s just one technique for eating right.

Registered Dietician Dayle Hayes offers strategies for smart snacking, with much of it dealing with the psychology of eating.

“One of my rules is, never eat out of the package. Always take it out, always create a serving size, and keep it in something small. How many times do people start with a bag of Doritos or chips, and they’re reaching in a eating them, and, pretty soon, you’re at the bottom of the bag, even though you didn’t want to be there,” Hayes says.

She suggests for small, bite-sized snacks to follow the suggested serving size and use a small container to eat it from. The idea is that the brain will be tricked into thinking there is more food than if the small snack were dwarfed on a larger container or plate.

For larger, solid snacks, like candy bars, she offers this advice:

“You might start with cutting it in half, putting the other half back in the bag, maybe putting it in a drawer in your desk, and I would hazard to guess that if it was in a drawer, out-of-sight and out-of-mind, you might even forget it was there. And if you got so that a half was okay, you might even try cutting it down to a quarter, just to gradually reduce what you’re consuming. I don’t suggest that anyone eliminate things, but if you try to never have one of these again, you’re likely to want the whole when you get around it,” Hayes says.
