Fitness Resolve

BILLINGS - With New Year's just around the corner, many hope this is the year they finally lose those extra pounds or build up a little more muscle.

It's a "mad rush of people," said Dan Cain, a certified trainer at Granite Health and Fitness, "everybody has this resolution."

He said every year he sees a post New Year's crowd, especially before and after work hours. "It's insane for about two weeks, but then month, month and a half later, it's right back to normal crowd," he said.

Cain said a lot of his job is trying to bring expectations, and reality, into focus. "First you want to have a goal, and that goal has to be realistic," he said, "you can't say 'hey I want to lose 50 pounds in a month.'"

"These small stepping stones are huge goals," he added, "just to get into the gym is a goal, coming in two to three times a month should be another goal."

It's not just about your effort in the gym though. Experts said if you don't eat well and get your sleep, you'll just be spinning your wheels. But if you can outlast the resolution crowd, you should be in good shape. "I would say about a month before they really start to feel good about it," Cain said. That's when they "start seeing the changes and it becomes a habit."

Getting fit can be a long journey, so Cain suggests you bring along some moral support. "Get a good workout partner," he said, "and make sure that you're pushing yourself. Two, three months later is when you really start to see those who have been dedicated enough to put in the right work."
