Domestic Violence in Montana

BILLINGS - Montana statistics show 8 to 10 deaths a year related to domestic violence.

Erin Matthews, Billings YWCA Domestic Violence Program manager, said that includes both men and women.

"Often times men are killed by their abused partner in retaliation or self-defense for what they've experienced," she said. "There are cases where women who will murder a partner without any prior history of domestic violence, but usually it's in response."

Holidays can bring about the best of times, but also the worst; Matthews said they provide a safe house for more women and children during the holidays. She said stress coupled with financial concerns tend to boil over this time of year.

However, police said they do not respond to more domestic disputes during the holidays. Matthews said that is because most women do not report their abuser to authorities.
