BILLINGS - If you are having trouble finding motivation for exercise, perhaps you can take the advice of Dortha Walters.

This November, Walters turned 100 years old, but only recently has she discovered the benefits of exercise. Through most of her life Dortha lived an active life and was seldom sick, she never started exercising.

“I always worked real hard, on my feet, and my health was good until I was 98,” Walters says.

Recent health problems lead her to finally start exercising when she came to Aspen Meadows Retirement Community. “I know how much good it does, because I have a lot of arthritis in my knee. I couldn’t hardly move when I came here,” Walters says.

For staying motivated, Walters says the support of others is important. “It’s the staff here and my children that keep me active. Sometimes, when I’m lagging along here, they take interest in me and encourage me. I’d be sitting here in the chair all the time if it wasn’t for the staff and family,” Walters says.

Dortha’s individual program consists of an exercise bicycle, a hand-pedal cycle, and seated exercises.

“It isn’t work. It’s a joy to do and be able to go ahead and get my exercises and feel better. I feel better because of this,” Walters says.
