BILLINGS - For weight loss, perhaps slow and steady wins the race. If losing weight seems overwhelming or confusing, Clinical Dietician Lindsey Diemert says keeping a gradual approach with moderation can help.

“A good recommendation for weight loss is a pound to two pounds a week. Then, we can see that weight loss stay off and more success in the long term,” Diemert says.

Following this technique, if setbacks are encountered, aiming more to long-term goals with diet and exercise can make a difference. “Weight loss is typically a series of plateaus, so your body loses some weight, it plateaus, and to go past that would be where your exercise piece comes in,” Diemert says.

In addition to number of pounds, there can be confusion as to the number of daily calories a person should consume.

“People make generalizations and say, “Oh, I should be on 2000 calories,” or I have a lot of people that come in that say, “Oh, I’m eating 800 calories.”

Generally, we never want you under 1200 calories, and then, from there, it’s really individualized, Diemert says, advising that a consultation from a health care professional is the best way to pinpoint the number of calories in a diet.
