MONTANA - The survey also shows a majority of Montanans believe grizzly bears in the greater Yellowstone region should be protected.

Wildlife officials say renewed efforts to protect grizzly bears appear to be working.

As grizzlies prepare to hibernate for the winter, wildlife officials estimate about 46 bears have been killed this year.

That's down from a record number of 79 grizzly deaths last year.

The bears were put back on the endangered species list in September.

Experts say bears had fewer run-ins with hunters this year.
