BILLINGS - When building a new home, designing can be a daunting process. There are many decisions to be made, especially if you are building eco-friendly.

Some experts say if you can afford to hire an interior designer you should. They do far more than just pick out colors interior designers and decorators are problem-solvers.

Interior Designer, Jared Dickerson of McCall Homes says, "An interior designer looks at the green aspect of design. We look at not only the building itself and what can be done within that, but also how it affects the environment and what do we do to limit negative impact. It goes beyond just materials within the house, but it goes into space planning and the orientation of the building."

Eco-friendly decorator, Carolee McCall had some professional advice on a few simple changes that you might not even think about. "Newer shower heads now give less water, but the same pressure you're use to. Stuff you wouldn't even notice on your own, but you're being less wasteful and that applies to all sorts of things from appliances, faucets, toilets to lights."

Clarifying priorities can make the process a lot easier. Designers say when building green knowledge is power. The more you know the easier it will be to recognize what you're looking for.

"The benefits are huge, not only to your own health by using things like low VOC paints and low emitting products, but also for the planet," said Carolee.

Builders say regulations have made it harder for contractors to claim the green stamp. So they suggest researching builders and materials to insure your home is environmentally conscientious.
