Ballplayers in For Groundbreaking

By Scott Beadle

BILLINGS - A handful of former pro baseball players, in fact, just about enough to field two starting orders, were on hand for the groundbreaking for the new ball field in Billings. That roster included players like Jeff Ballard, Todd Eames, Charlie Beene and Les Barnes, a member of the first-season 1948 Mustangs.
At a reception after the groundbreaking, players took turns signing baseballs, and shared a brief overview of their time playing in the Magic City, as well as their tenure in the big leagues.
"I do have a lot of memories of old Cobb Field in 1955 and 1956," said Beene. "I think it's great that they got a new ballpark," he added.
The Mustangs also unveiled a special log to commemorate the last season of the old stadium. They'll wear the Cobb Field logo on their uniform sleeves this season. The team store will also feature other memorabilia with the logo.
