Child Proofing Your Home

BILLINGS - It's National Safe Kids week and KULR-8 is highlighting some of the ways all parents and caregivers can keep children from injury and even death.

Even the most safety-conscious households have hidden dangers. Children are more vulnerable to injuries adults may not even consider because of their natural curiosity. Experts say child proofing your home is simple and keeps parents from having to constantly say "no" to their children.

Family Tree Program Coordinator, Stacy Dreessen advises, "Any time you have a chord secure the chord, lamp chord, telephone chord, any type of chord secure it. Have all outlet covers not in use covered. All door knob handles to outside areas should be covered and make sure you have covers on your garbage cans because kids love to play in the garbage. On your countertop make sure all utensils are safe and that you don't have any knives or sharp objects within reach. Any cabinets that have anything breakable or chemicals in them have locking cabinets or medications lock up medications."

More than 2,000 children are killed in accidents at home every year. Experts say while child proofing can reduce those risks, it's no substitute for parental supervision. For more tips on home safety, click here.
