BILLINGS - With the recession, folks are scrutinizing their budgets more and more. In some cases that could mean putting your health on the back burner. One place that health experts say people aren't cutting back on, is therapy.
Who isn't stressed out by the current economy? If you've lost your job or your house, taken a pay cut, or are just worried about what's next, you may already know how the recession can get you down. And some people get more than down, they get depressed.
"My practice is busy. And I think people are coming to us because finances are always a stress and they're saying, now it's worse," says Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor Tom Ferro.
Overwhelming stress can mean relationship problems and health issues. "We work with people to look at it for what it is and look forward and not backward and try to come up with opportunity and solutions rather than, I lost my job, it's the end of the world. It could be an opportunity to go back to school or find work that they really love," says Ferro.
Ferro says his clients are willing to pay for therapy even though things are tight, because it's such a hard time in their lives. "You don't have to have horrible, terrible problems. It can be preventative. It can pull people together and say we're going to make a change and it's hard to do by yourself sometimes."
To get back on track Ferro helps clients find the good in their current situation. He says getting out of a rut can help. Take the opportunity to spend more time with your family, playing board games or just having coffee together; quality time doesn't have to cost. And exercise is important too.
When you're working out you're body is in the opposite state from it's stressed. You breathe deeper, your muscles loosen up and your mind can focus. "I'm really espoused to the exercise component in therapy," says Ferro.
It's not easy, and Ferro says it can take awhile to turn your outlook around. But making the best of a bad situation is the best way to make it to the other side.
