Aviation Teacher Reacts to Crash

BILLINGS - The plane that crashed in Butte was a Pilatus PC-12 made by a Swiss company.

Dan Hargrove, the Director of Aviation at Rocky Mountain College, said these planes cost several million dollars and are often used as corporate jets. He said people like them because they have a turbo jet, a good safety record, and can be flown with only one pilot.

In light of the crash, Hargrove said instructors spent a little more time talking to aviation students. "We do remind them that aviation is an industry that requires risk management and there's always risk in flying," he said.

"So you have to be well trained and well prepared. But on the other hand it is still extremely safe. You've heard the statistics many times, it is safer to fly on an airliner than it is to drive to the airport and that still remains true."
