The Yegen Family

By Katie Ussin

BILLINGS - One look around inside the office of Peter Yegen Jr. Incorporated and you know it is not your average insurance outfitter.

"Peter Yegen Jr, was the man who opened this business in 1919," said Charlie Yegen.

Black and white photos wallpaper the Yegen office, and reads like a history book. Peter Yegen III is the grandson of Peter Yegen Senior, who immigrated to Billings from Switzerland with his brother Christian in 1882.

"He never wore a gun," remembered Peter III. "He said people who wore guns were looking for trouble."

The Yegen Brothers were just looking to make it. At first, they had a bakery and sold food to train passengers. Later, they got involved in real estate, banking, ranching, and opened up a giant general store; which sat where Granny's Attic does today.

"We're particularly fortunate that our forefathers were foresighted enough to be able to choose this place," said Charlie. "It's filled with phenomenal people and outstanding scenery, terrific opportunities for business and recreation."

Charlie, his brother Peter IV, and their father Peter the III run the insurance and real estate company today, along with Charlie's daughter Brenna. Three generations of Yegens under one roof. "It's very wonderful," said Peter III. "We've always been a family outfit and still are fortunately."

This pioneer family treads softly on their accomplishments although they have, and continue, to leave a huge imprint on the Billings area.

"That's always been an important part of our whole kind of make-up; what can we do to make things a little bit better, how can we help a little bit and that's where we are today," said Charlie.

And longevity runs in the Yegen Family. Peter Yegen Jr. lived to be 93, and Peter III turns 90 in December.
