Dunn Mountain Sunday

By Sarah Gravlee

BILLINGS - The Dunn Mountain Fire burning north of Shepherd is Montana's largest wildland fire of the season, and is still growing.

It's more than 102,000 acres and is 55% contained. Officials said that jump in acreage is mostly due to better mapping since the fire had a relatively calm night.

Saturday night Musselshell County Sheriffs evacuated about five families who live on Fishel Creek Road and West Musselshell Road. Those families were allowed to return to their homes at about noon Sunday. In the meantime, dozens of residents in the Fattig Creek Road area remain on stand by.

Officials said the fire is still east of Fattig Creek and west of Fishel Creek, and firefighters are working hard to keep it that way. They said Sunday is a critical day as cooler temperatures and lack of wind could allow fire crews to get a leg up.

The fire has not burnt any structures, but the grass it burnt is worth millions to land owners. The fire started on Ellen Pfister's land. While she says she's grateful the fire teams saved her home, she has lost a lot.

"We're about 70% burned out," she said. "We managed to save our winter grass, but our best summer grass is gone. " To cattle ranchers grass means money in the pocket. "It's all about grass," Pfister said. "It doesn't look very valuable, but it is to us."

Grass feeds the cows and cows bring in the money. When Ellen watched 70% of her land go up in smoke, she said she had to rethink the entire operation. "It's like burning your business," she said. "In this case our business will come back eventually, but between the time you lose your business and can get it back you have a stressful period in there. It means you have to revamp our plant and figure out who gets sold to support the rest of them."
