Dunn Mountain Fire Explodes

By Nick Lough

BILLINGS - The Dunn Mountain Fire is now burning north of Shepherd and has quickly become Montana's largest wildfire of the season.

Helicopters are now helping with air support as the winds died down Thursday, but that wasn't the case earlier in the week as fifty-mile-per hour gusts helped pushed the Dunn Mountain Fire from a few thousand acres to now more than 61,000.

"This summer, it's the biggest fire in Montana," said DNRC's Dwayne Andrews. "It was obviously a wind driven fire that there wasn't a whole lot you could do. You couldn't get in front of it. It was moving too fast," said DNRC's Todd Klemann.

A type two management team is expected to reach fire camp late Thursday night, but fire crews say judging by how fast this fire has already spread even more resources might need to be called in. "We've got a lot of aerial support, we're treating hot spots, we've got a lot of engines on it," said Andrews.

Nine ranches in the area are all threatened by the blaze. Although no evacuations have been ordered some have left, but crews say the ones that are staying are really helping with the fight. "They've been using their own heavy equipment, they've been using tractors with discs, they've been helping each other, they've just done an outstanding job," said Andrews. Officials say that effort has so far saved every structure and out building in this fires path.
