HELENA - Crews are working to suppress a fast-growing wildfire in the Deep Creek area outside of Townsend.

The fire began at about 2 p.m. Monday and had grown to more than 600 acres by Monday night. The National Weather Service reported temperatures of 97 degrees, and fire officials reported 10 mile per hour winds near the fire.

John Grassy with the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation says an air attack is under way, and includes two helicopters and two heavy air tankers. Grassy says engines from the U.S. Forest Service, the DNRC and Broadwater County also are being used to fight the blaze. He says the fire is burning in heavy timber and spotting about a quarter-mile ahead of itself. The cause of the fire is unknown.
