Fire Updates and Fire Costs

By Naomi Pescovitz

MONTANA & WYOMING - The Gunbarrel Fire burning about 40 miles west of Cody has reached nearly 40,000 acres and is 0% contained. While nearly 200 personnel are still busy fighting that fire, crews are mopping up at three other fires in our area.

The Cascade Fire west of Red Lodge burned more than 10,000 but is now 85% contained. The Tumble Creek Fire burned almost 400 acres and is now fully contained. Air patrols are monitoring both of those fires.

The Lehardy fire in Yellowstone National Park burned more than 14 square miles since its start in late July, but there was some good news for those firefighters Tuesday. After a little clean up work, the crews fighting that blaze are heading home.

We are in the midst of fire season, and with four major fires in our area so far, costs are starting to add up.

The Lehardy fire in Yellowstone National Park has cost more than $1.3 million. The Tumble Creek Fire west of Nye has totaled at $1.4 million. The Gunbarrel Fire is the second most expensive, at $4.1 million. The most expensive fire has been the Cascade fire west of Red Lodge at a total of $8.2 million spent on resources.

More than $15 million have been spent on wild fires in our area this season alone. Officials with the Bureau of Land Management say helicopters and other air support are the most costly fire fighting resources.
